Keatons Lake Boat Launch/Cove Area is CLOSED to all water recreation and water contact until further notice. 6/2/26

Keatons Lake boat launch and cove area are CLOSED to all water recreation and water contact until further notice. (See Map below for CLOSED AREA)

Members and their pets should avoid contact with the water as well as any other activities that may pose a risk of ingesting water in the CLOSED AREA of Keatons Lake.

Cumberland Beach on Keatons Lake and all other areas of Keatons Lake outside of the restricted area are OPEN to water activities.

LOWA collected water samples for lab testing from Keatons Lake boat launch area on Friday, May 29. Those results have been received.

  • Keatons Lake Boat Launch Area=E. coli concentration was at 1732.9 MPN/100ML (MPN/100ml=CFU/100ml) 
  • Virginia Department of Health (VDH) E. coli threshold of 235 CFU/100ml for beach advisories.

LOWA staff will continue to collect water samples for further lab testing and will continue to notify members when test results are received.

Keatons Lake Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) Monitoring Update 6/2/26:

LOWA staff have initiated our Harmful Algae Bloom (HAB) monitoring protocol for the summer season and are actively conducting weekly algae sampling at Keatons Lake.

We are pleased to report that all testing results to date have been well below any level of concern for potentially toxic algae species.

Routine monitoring will continue throughout the summer to help ensure the safety and enjoyment of our waterways. If conditions change, members will be notified promptly.

Thank you for helping us keep our lakes safe for everyone to enjoy.


 

Keatons Lake Notice: Keatons Lake Boat Launch is under a SWIM ADVISORY 5/22/2026 until further notice.

While the boat launch is open, members swim and engage in water activities at their own risk until test results confirm lower E. coli concentrations at this location. This advisory is in place until further notice to help protect the health and safety of all users.

Keatons Lake Boat Launch=298.7 MPN/100ml (MPN/100ml=CFU/100ml)
Virginia Department of Health (VDH) E. coli threshold of 235 CFU/100ml for beach advisories.
