Clubs wishing to be listed on this site can complete the form above. A phone number or email as well as a name of a point of contact is required.

Activities and clubs are open to all residents and tenants of LOW, although some organizations may have specific unique membership requirements. Although every effort has been made to offer a complete listing, new clubs form and inactive clubs disband from time to time. Some clubs have chosen not to be included here. These clubs and groups are not directly affiliated with Lake of the Woods Association, however they are listed as a courtesy.

Any member or tenant may initiate a new club following demonstration of sufficient interest by LOWA members and approval of the General Manager. Advertising in Lake Currents is available to solicit members for newly organized clubs is available by calling the Communications Office, 540-972-2278.

Battlefield Boogie Club

The Battlefield Boogie Club is a dance club that promotes the Carolina Shag. The Club is open to folks of all ages who like to dance. Bocce Club

Minimal exertion, maximum payout in fun, friendly competition. Bocce is enjoyed by all ages and fitness levels, is easy to learn and a great social time! The LOW Bocce Club has courts at Sweetbriar Park and offers league play, tournaments, Open Play and free lessons. There's a nominal membership fee, but non-members can also pay to play in the league or tournaments. Monthly meetings are the 1st Wednesdays at 7pm. Duplicate Bridge: This non-sanctioned, social group meets weekly on Sunday evenings. First-timers please contact the current director in advance. Bring a partner!

Friday Bridge: (general and refresher) This social, contract bridge group meets weekly. New players must call the monthly director in advance so tables can be arranged.

Ladies Bridge: This social, contract bridge group meets Wednesdays for six rounds of play, mid-morning to mid-afternoon, with a break for lunch. Chess Club

Democratic Club

The focus of the Democratic Club is to become better informed about national, state, and local governments and the matters before them. The Club educates its members on wide-ranging issues and how to be strong advocates for these issues. A service project for the community is undertaken annually. Fun Bowling League

The LOW Fun Bowling League is a sanctioned, recreational mixed league for both men and women (over 40) that meets for 24 weeks from October through April at the AMF Bowling Lanes in Fredericksburg. Singles welcome. We bowl Thursdays at 1pm. There are 24 teams on this league not including 15-20 substitute bowlers who step in during the bowling season when a regular member cannot be available.

The LOW Garden Club is a nonprofit group that joined in 1978 with the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Their objective is to serve LOW through civic and beautification endeavors. Annual fundraising activities enable continuation of these projects. The Club is responsible for the Memorial Garden (across from the Holcomb Building), the Clubhouse Garden, and the Wilderness Library Garden. Other activities include decorating the Clubhouse for the winter holidays and judging the LOW Holiday Lights contest. Meetings with featured speakers are held monthly; new members are always welcome. Field trips and workshops are often held as well. Annual dues are $30. The Happy Tails Dog Club is a non-profit group of dog lovers that formed in June of 2017.  The mission of the Club is to provide a safe and healthful environment for Club Member dogs to play and socialize with other dogs. The dog park is located at the Life Estates parcel 1410 Lakeview Pkwy, behind the mail station. The LGA invites you to join us on Tuesdays from April through October. Play golf with either the 9 or 18 hole groups. Members are flighted based on handicap and four-person teams are set up. Membership is open to all female LOW property owners, tenants and/or their dependent daughters age 18 or over. Annual dues are $25. Members are required to have a handicap. The $38 handicap fee is paid directly to the Pro Shop. We have special tournaments throughout the year;  Spring Tournament, Member/Guest  Sadie Hawkins President's Cup, Member/Member and  Cancer Tournament. The season ends with a fun scramble at the end of October, with a closing luncheon and awards ceremony.

The LOW Lioness Club is a non-profit women's community service group that organizes and hosts many fundraising activities throughout the year to support various local charitable organizations and causes. Dinner meetings take place on the second Thursday of every month. Activities include a Fall and Spring Fashion Show, a fall book and bake sale, a Spring Flea Market/Craft Fair, food drives to benefit the Wilderness Food Pantry, assistance with the Lions Club Eye glass recycling program, sponsoring of an ice cream social and Christmas gift wrapping day at Childhelp as well as many other community service projects. The LOW Lions Club, chartered in 1982, is a member of the world’s largest service club organization, Lions Clubs International. The LOW Lions Club supports the local community through many service projects such as the Wilderness Food Pantry, medical equipment loans, donations and grants to other local non-profit organizations, American Red Cross Blood Drives, sight and hearing screening for Orange County school students, classroom grants for local teachers and college scholarships for area students. The Club also sponsors LEO Clubs for local middle and high school students. An active eyeglass recycling program provides thousands of eyeglasses for worldwide distribution. Fundraising activities, including the Club’s popular weekly Yard Sale, generate the funds needed to support these important service projects. If you're an artist or an art lover, we welcome you to join Lake of the Woods Arts (formerly LOWVAC).  We meet monthly on the first Monday at 2pm in the Community Center to develop our creativity, share our art and learn from one another. Our Annual Fine Art Show and Sale is held in the Fall to showcase LOW artists and their art and support the art programs in the Orange County schools through a raffle of fine art. The purpose of the MGA is to promote and encourage the game of golf in cooperation with the Golf Pro, the LOW Golf Committee and the LGA. The goal of the MGA is to bring men together to provide a social outlet and to promote and improve the quality of golf at LOW. The MGA also serves as an advocate for our golf course amenity. The MGA hosts numerous tournaments and activities throughout the year. Membership is open to male property owners and/or tenants and their dependents 18 years of age and older. Dues are $20/year. Annual  Virginia State Golf Association handicap fees are payable through the Pro Shop. 
MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers)

Mothers of Preschoolers is a study, fellowship, recreational and social group for moms of kindergarten age children and younger. Activities include adult study, Bible study, crafts and play time with children. Child care provided; walk-ins welcome. The meetings take place at The LOW Church in the Founders Room and childcare is downstairs.

Pickleball is a fast-growing, fun & exciting sport that can be adapted for all skill levels. The LOW Pickleball Club is socially active and welcomes all adults 18 years of age and older. Played with a paddle and whiffle-style ball, it is typically played as doubles, inside or on LOW's well maintained outside courts. Adult Pickleball is played indoors at the Community Center every M-F from 9:30 AM to 3 PM. Free Beginners Classes are offered on Thursdays from 10:10AM to noon and occasional Saturdays at the Community Center without requiring an amenity or Club membership. We have equipment, including paddles, that can be used if you would like to give this sport a try. Attendees should wear dedicated indoor court shoes (not jogging shoes) since we play on a gym floor.  You must be an amenity member in order to join the Pickleball Club. Club membership is $10 per person and gives you access to Sign-Up Genius, which allows members to sign up for court times and join organized events, such as Deal Pickle, a non-competitive way to learn the game and meet other club members, Ladder League on Sundays, or our social events that take us to places like Old House and the FredNats.

This is an independent "for fun" softball league sponsored by the LOW Church and open to everyone regardless of age, experience or level of ability. Men's teams play modified fast pitch and co-ed teams play modified slow pitch. The season runs from April through September with games played at Hollyfield Park on Monday and Thursday at 7pm, and on Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

Square dancing is a healthy activity for the mind and body that can be easily enjoyed by people of all ages. No special skills are involved. Club members dance on the second, fourth and fifth Friday of each month at the Community Center Gym from 7:00-9:00 pm. Instruction for new dancers is offered on Tuesday evenings from mid-September to April from 7:00 - 9:00 pm at the Clubhouse, lower level. Club dues and class tuition are nominal. The Lake of the Woods Barracudas is a summer swim team located in the lake at Sweetbriar Park Pool. We are part of the Rappahannock Swim League. The team is open to swimmers age 5-18. Our aim is to help our swimmers improve their skills, learn good sportsmanship, and have fun while competing against other local teams. Our season runs from Memorial Day until the last weekend in July.

Wilderness Friends of the Library

Alcoholics Anonymous

Learn to live the 12 steps to eliminating alcohol dependency from your life while giving and receiving support from others who care about your success. Open to all who want to learn about alcoholism. Meets at the LOW church Monday at 7pm.  Also holding zoom meetings on Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 7pm for those who do not want to meet in person. COVID 19 rules for the church must be followed. American Red Cross

The local American Red Cross in Fredericksburg holds a monthly blood drive at LOW. Scheduled dates and times are published in Lake Currents. Usually the fourth Tuesday of the month, every other month. Held in the Community Center. 

Driver Safety Program
LOW Lions sponsor AARP's "Driver Safety Program," a refresher and defensive driving course designed for older drivers age 50 and up. Those completing the course are eligible for a discount on their auto liability insurance, which is good for three years. 
Emergency Training Classes
Available through LOW Volunteer Fire and Rescue, an Ambulance Driver Course, EMT training and CPR classes are offered to members who are interested in learning these skills and/or becoming emergency volunteers. Please consult the Fire and Rescue LOW Directory for contacts.
Friends of Lake of the Woods (FLOW)

Friends of Lake of the Woods (FLOW) is an independent 501(c)(3) corporation which was created by a group of like-minded Lake of the Woods property owners who believe it is absolutely essential to add to and improve association infrastructure and amenities to meet the changing needs of the community. FLOW is dedicated to promoting and supporting the LOW community.  FLOW assists in enhancing LOW amenities, facilities and beautification projects by raising funds through tax-deductible charitable donations from property owners like you. LOWLINC: Living Independently in Our Community

LOWLINC: Empowering adults 55+ to live full and independent lives in their homes at the lake. LOW Fire & Rescue

Incorporated under Virginia law on August 23rd 1971 with a simple mission "To aid in the protection and preservation of both life and property by maintaining a high degree of efficiency in both firefighting and first aid." Most of our calls come from within the designated area of the Rapidan River on the north, the Spotsylvania line on the east just over Route 20 on the south, and on the west, Route 611 to Burr Hill and then to Route 692 and up to the Rapidan River.  Some calls are farther away in the town of Orange where others, on a reciprocal basis, and depending on need are in either Spotsylvania or Culpeper Counties.

Orange County Department of Tourism
The Orange County Department of Tourism stocks the brochure stand located in the vestibule of the Holcomb Building. Volunteers are always needed to meet and greet visitors to Orange County or serve in other ways to promote Orange County Tourism.
Wilderness Food Pantry

The LOW Lions Club sponsors the Wilderness Food Pantry, located at the intersection of Route 20 and Route 611 behind the Market Place shopping center. Significant support is provided by the LOW Lioness Club in holding food drives to solicit donation s of non-perishable food items and cash to keep the pantry stocked with items of area families in need. Our group supports the ongoing efforts at Alice C.Tyler Village, which is an outstanding residential facility (nationally known) for the treatment and healing of severely abused and neglected children between the ages of 4 and 14. The Village is located in Lignum, just a few miles down the road from us and because of close proximity our volunteer efforts are unique in that we provide direct, personal support for the children residing at the Village. 
Four County Players
This non-profit volunteer community theater group provides musical, play and concert experience for amateur and professional thespians alike. The players put on several programs a year at the Barboursville Community Center in Barboursville. Current and upcoming show dates and ticket prices can be found on their website fourcp.org.

Montpelier
Montpelier the former home of James Madison, fourth president of the United States and his wife, Dolley, is located on Route 20, a few miles south of the town of Orange. Orange Recreation Association, a member of the Virginia Youth Soccer Association and USYSA; provides an opportunity for children ages 3 through 18 to learn and compete in playing soccer. The fall season runs from mid-August to November. The spring season runs from mid-March to June.
Project EXCEL
Volunteers for Project EXCEL donate one hour a week to work with selected local elementary and middle school children in grades kindergarten through sixth to help improve reading, math or science skills. Interested volunteers should contact the Project EXCEL coordinator Ginny Biggs, 571-259-8951.
